About Me

M. Shane Phillips, MD, specializes in family medicine at Willis Knighton Primary Care Ruston on Northpointe Lane. He treats chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hypothyroidism and obesity as well as nonsurgical orthopedic injuries. He also tackles preventive medicine, treats acute illnesses and handles joint injections, skin biopsies, laceration repairs and the removal of benign skin lesions.

A native of Ruston, Dr. Phillips said he was inspired to become a doctor by his own pediatrician.

“I spent a lot of time in the hospital for recurrent respiratory illness, especially during the holiday season,” he said. “After fearing a condition much worse, it ended up being that I was allergic to our real Christmas tree. However, I had a great pediatrician. The hospital staff, orderlies, respiratory therapists and nurses were always outstanding and compassionate for a scared little boy. So I knew I wanted to grow up and help people one day like them.”

Dr. Phillips earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology degree at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston and a Doctor of Medicine degree at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed his residency in family medicine at the Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency Program in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he served as chief resident. He also completed a primary care sports medicine fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama.

He is a medical team physician for Louisiana Tech University; medical director for a hospice, home health agency and two nursing homes; and physician for the Lincoln Parish Detention Center.  He also collaborates with a nurse practitioner at TechCare, the Louisiana Tech University student health program.

In his free time, he enjoys cooking, traveling and watching sporting events.
