About Me

Mark C. Callanan, Jr., MD, FAAOS, practices orthopedic surgery and sports medicine at The Orthopaedic Clinic in Shreveport. Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Additionally he has obtained secondary sports medicine certification from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, and he is currently a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (FAAOS), Dr. Callanan treats musculoskeletal conditions resulting from injury, overuse and arthritis. He specializes in arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques to minimize recovery time so patients can quickly get back to their work and play routine. Dr. Callanan’s training in cartilage restoration procedures and the application of biologics may aid in injury recovery, if appropriate. A believer in strong patient-physician relationships, he empowers patients in decision-making so they are more comfortable with the treatment plan that is data-driven.

Extensive education and work at prestigious centers bring value to the Shreveport-Bossier sports community, including Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, Boston University, Massachusetts General Hospital, an orthopedic surgery residency at Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program (HCORP), and a sports medicine and arthroscopy fellowship at Andrew’s Institute in Pensacola, Florida. Dr. Callanan has worked with Auburn University football and athletics, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos minor-league baseball team, and area high school athletic programs.

In addition to his work in the clinic and out on the field, Dr. Callanan contributes to academia. He is involved in orthopedic studies, is an author of many articles in peer-reviewed journals, and he presents his own research at regional and national conferences. Dr. Callanan’s research and academic pursuits earned him the distinguished John Charnley Award.

Dr. Callanan and his wife reside in Shreveport with their two dogs. His personal interests include physical fitness, powerlifting, and outdoor activities like hunting and fishing.
